Bunions

Bunions, also known as hallux abducto valgus, is a common foot condition that affects the big toe. This condition causes a bump to form on the inside of the first toe joint, with the big toe gradually turning outward toward the smaller toes.

Approximately 1 in 5 Australians will experience bunions during their lifetime, with women being more likely to develop them than men. In fact, 40% of women over the age of 50 and 20% of men will be affected. Bunions can cause pain in the big toe, often leading to difficulties with balance and prolonged walking.

Bunions can develop due to a combination of factors, with genetics and family history playing a significant role in predisposition. Age and being female also increase the likelihood, particularly during menopause or pregnancy when hormonal changes can affect foot structure.

Wearing inappropriate footwear, such as narrow shoes or high heels, can exacerbate the condition, while foot structures like flat feet also contribute. Other factors like arthritis, obesity, and previous injury or trauma to the foot can further heighten the risk of developing bunions.
